The Credential Manager is set to its normal setting of manual, or rather on demand, and when I checked now after logging in successfully it was running. Sometimes unplugging and re-plugging in the Thunderbolt cable to the dock seems to do something that brings the prompt up, but mostly not (I started trying things like that out of desperation.)

Only after I'm already logged in and hit Windows+L and then try to log back in do I get the blurred login screen with no password prompt. I'm curious as to how Fast Startup would affect this, though? The machine works 100% of the time when I power it down and then power it back up, I get a login prompt and it works without a hitch.

Sometimes removing the Thunderbolt cable repeatedly may jar Windows 10 into cooperating and presenting a login prompt, but mostly Kimmo-J wrote: I have all recent patches for everything, including the Thunderbolt dock firmware and the PC itself. I need to lock my computer half a dozen times a day, so instead now I have to shut it down half a dozen times a day. On first boot, the password prompt comes up normally every time. I found about it and did the whole reboot thing and recovery mode and cleaned out all those caches, but it still leaves me with no way to log back in once I lock the computer - have to force a reboot and then I can log in. Just stuck on a blurry background and a few on-screen buttons that do let me reboot etc, but no way to enter password. I don't know if either of those factor in but either way I have an issue with the login screen completely failing to bring up the password prompt. Using a Lenovo T490 and a Thunderbolt 3 dock.
